In an effort to support the development of a world-class workforce and fulfill the mission of the Office of Vocational and Technical Education (OVTE), a variety of high quality service area programs is offered to the students of Mississippi. OVTE career and technical education programs prepare all students for careers, technologies, adult roles, leadership, and responsibilities to provide a competent workforce that will support and enhance Mississippi’s economy. Program areas in vocational-technical education provide a meaningful framework of a broad range of careers that allows students, teachers, and parents to bridge the gap between school and authentic career experiences. All vocational-technical curricula are research-based and meet industry-specific, technology, workplace skills, and academic standards. The delivery system is effective and responsive to changing needs of business and industry. OVTE programs are part of an integrated educational delivery system that accommodates every secondary and postsecondary school district and provided instructional services to nearly two hundred thousand individuals in 2001-2002. In 2001-2002, a total of 28,271 students enrolled in 999 secondary occupational programs statewide. These programs provided instruction in 49 different occupational areas. Vocational and technical programs in secondary, postsecondary, short-term adult, industry training, and business and industry partnership settings, enable students to acquire needed skills and abilities and achieve their occupational goals. Upon successful completion of vocational-technical program area courses, students will possess marketable job skills and national industry certifications.
