Mississippi Writing Assessment Program

In an effort to better prepare students for the rigorous writing requirements of the Common Core State Standards, the Mississippi Writing Assessment Program is transitioning to a formative assessment process that informs instructional practice in grades 4 through 12 to assist students in achieving rigorous college and career readiness.

Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, the Grade 4 and Grade 7 Writing assessments will no longer be administered.  Also beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, the English II Writing E/PP/R (Expository/Position Paper/Response to Literature) assessment will no longer be a graduation requirement for those students enrolled in English II for the first time.

However, the English II Writing assessment remains a graduation requirement for those students enrolled in English II prior to the 2012-2013 school year.  Please note the following information regarding the English II Writing assessments for those students enrolled in English II prior to 2012-2013:

  • Those students enrolled in English II for the first time in the 2007-2008 school year or prior who have not passed the writing assessment MUST take the English II Writing (Expository only) assessment.  This assessment is considered the Green form.

  • Those students enrolled in English II for the first time in the 2008-2009 school year who have not passed the writing assessment MUST take the English II Writing E/PP (Expository and Position only) assessment.  This assessment is considered the Orange form.

  • Those students enrolled in English II for the first time in the 2009-2010, 2010-2011, or 2011-2012 school year who have not passed the writing assessment MUST take the English II Writing E/PP/R (Expository, Position, and Response to Literature) assessment.  This assessment is considered the Blue form.

  • Students who have never enrolled in English II prior to the 2012-2013 school year are NOT required to pass the English II Writing assessment to meet graduation requirements.
