Teach Mississippi!

The Mississippi Teacher Shortage Act of 1998 stands to be a win-win situation for Mississippians.
On one hand, it will serve to ease the teacher shortage found in the Mississippi Delta area and other
regions where teachers are hard to find. And it is also a prime opportunity for prospective teachers to
pay for a college education.



Critical Needs Incentives

1.    Critical Needs Teacher Scholarship Program

       Benefits
        Tuition, fees, books, and average cost of room and meals
        Full-time students (four annual awards)
        Part-time students (six annual awards)

        Requirements
        2.5 high school GPA, 18 ACT
        Maintain 2.5 for renewal

        Obligation
        4 years' award = 3 years' teaching in CSA
        Other awards = Year for year
        Default = Immediate repayment plus interest

 2.    William F. Winter Scholarship Loan Program

        Benefits
         Up to $1000 - Freshman and Sophomore year
         Up to $3000 - Junior and Senior year

        Requirements
        Freshman - 3.0 high school GPA and 21 ACT
        Sophomores through Seniors - 2.5 college GPA

        Obligation
        1 year loan forgiveness = 1 year teaching in MS
        CSA Incentive = 4 years' forgiveness for 3 years' teaching in CSA
        Default = Immediate repayment plus interest

 3.     Mississippi Teacher Fellowship Program (MTFP)

        Benefits
       Tuition, books, materials, and fees for three year maximum
         Access to Mentoring Network

        Requirements
        CSA teacher with Class A license
        Acceptance in approved Master of Ed/Ed Specialist Program
        Comply with eligibility requirements for MTFP

        Obligation
        3 years' teaching in CSA
        Default = Immediate repayment plus interest

4.    Mississippi School Administrator Sabbatical Program
                      (Available in all School Districts)

       Benefits
        Teacher salary paid with fringe benefits during program

        Requirements
        Three years' teaching experience
        District recommendation

       Obligation
        Five years' administration in sponsoring district
        Default = Immediate repayment plus interest

5.    Moving Expense

       Benefits
       Reimbursement maximum - $1000

        Requirements
        CSA district approval
        One time award only

6.    Housing Assistance for Teachers (H.A.T.)

        Benefits
        Maximum loan of $6000 pays closing cost for CSA teacher

       Requirements
        House must be in same county as school district

        Obligation
        CSA Incentive = 1 year's service for 1/3 amount of loan
