Beginning Principals Network- four days, 20 SEMI credits
The purpose of this network is to provide current information and continuing support for career-level administrators during their first year as principal. Each session addresses one or more critical issues identified by the participants and provides access to the Mississippi Department of Education personnel who can provide assistance. In addition, the sessions offer multiple opportunities for the principals to share with and learn from one another as well as from experienced principals across the state.
Connecting
Curriculum and Assessment: From Frameworks to Score Reports (7-12) - four
days, 20 SEMI credit

This module is designed to assist career-level
administrators in analyzing current Mississippi test score reports and
in utilizing that information to make improvements in student learning
and performance. The focus on the 7-12 module is on the Subject Area Testing
Program (SATP) which includes end-of-course tests in Algebra I, Biology
I, English II, and US History from 1877. In addition, this module includes
the Grade 7 Writing Assessment and the use of these results to plan instruction
that takes students from Grade 7 writing requirements to those of English
II. Administrators participate in an in-depth study of current criterion
and norm referenced score reports and explore the connections between the
tests and the Mississippi Curriculum Frameworks, Curriculum Benchmarks,
Test Blueprints, and SATP Teacher Surveys of Competencies and Objectives.
Participants also develop stategies to involve teachers and other administrators
in making instructional improvements in their schools.
Effective
School and Classroom Management – four days, 20 SEMI credits
This module provides school teams, composed of
a career-level principal and two teachers (or a teacher and a counselor)
from the same school, with training in research-based strategies for positive
school and classroom management. Participants explore strategies to improve
the consistency and effectiveness of their school behavior systems, to
build and sustain effective student behavior practices, to improve classroom
effectiveness, to decrease student misbehavior and foster positive social
skills, and to improve the alignment of classroom and school-wide discipline
procedures. Participating teams develop action plans to address the needs
in their individual schools. Team registration required.
Superintendents
Network - nineteen days, 95 SEMI credits
This program, developed and presented in partnership
with the Mississippi Association of School Superintendents (MASS), is designed
to provide practical training and technical assistance to newly elected
or appointed school district superintendents. Scheduled over 10 months,
each two-day monthly session offers timely, job-embedded information to
assist new superintendents as they assume the role of chief educational
leader in their school districts. The format for each session includes
interactive presentations of specific services provided by the Mississippi
Department of Education and practical exploration of topics critical to
the successful operation of a school district.
Technology
Academy for School Leaders (TASL) - ten days, 50 SEMI credits
This academy is designed to assist school district teams of administrators
to address a local school improvement issue. Funded by a grant from the
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, each TASL academy focuses on one of
three themes: Aligning Assessment, Curriculum, and Instruction; Improving
Teaching and Learning Strategies; or Supervision of Curriculum and Instruction.
Participating teams work with an assigned facilitator during four initial
days of the academy session followed by two follow-up sessions during the
year. Between academy sessions, team members carry out their implementation
plan and complete an online course.
Technology
-The Next Level I & II - two days, 10 SEMI credits each
These new modules target the need of school administrators to update
and expand their skills in the use of technology to promote innovation
toward school improvement. The two 2- day modules are designed for
career-level administrators who have successfully completed Technology-An
Administrator’s Perspective and/or who have an intermediate to advanced
technology skill level. Each module stands alone. The focus
of Technology – The Next Level I is on the use of Excel to
effectively collect, analyze, and present data and to manage budgets and
accounts. The focus of Technology – The Next Level II
is on creating and using video in school projects and presentations.
In addition, participants explore such topics as Internet safety, acceptable
use policies, teacher evaluation, safety, security, equity, and copyright
laws.

Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People - four days, 20 SEMI credits
This training focuses on personal and interpersonal levels of leadership. The content includes how to gain more fulfillment from your time, your relationships-your life; a fundamental approach to personal effectiveness; the seven habits common to all highly effective people; powerful lessons in personal change; and principles to help you achieve long-term happiness and growth.
School Improvement through Professional Development - four days, 20 SEMI credits
This module provides participants with strategies for involving staff in an ongoing school improvement process. Participants experience strategies for defining a vision for staff development; assessing needs formulating goals and objectives; designing and implementing activities; evaluating outcomes; and addressing the needs of the adult learner.The Nuts and Bolts of Grant Writing- two days, 10 SEMI credits
This module provides administrators with the mechanics of grant writing and proposal development. The first session focuses primarily on the process of identifying funding sources, developing the grant and/or proposal package, project management, and peer review. The second day provides follow-up technical assistance on specific grant applications or proposals developed by the participants for funding to support school or district needs. The sessions are interactive and provide participants with an opportunity to use technology as a tool to enhance their efforts to secure external funds for their school districts. Registration is open to teams composed of a career-level administrator and one additional person from the school or district who will assist in the grant writing process.Technology: An Administrator’s Perspective – ten days, 50 SEMI credits
This module is designed to provide Mississippi school administrators with basic information and hands-on experience with technology. Scheduled over a period of several months, the training focuses on current research regarding the use of technology for instruction; an introduction to e-mail and the internet; the use of Windows 95 for word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and presentations; hardware and software considerations; and distance education. Through planned field trips, participants have the opportunity to see outstanding technology programs in operation.

Published quarterly, the newsletter offers current information to meet the needs of today’s fast-paced administrator. School administrators are encouraged to submit articles, notices of good things happening, descriptions of effective strategies used, helpful resources, and letters to the editor. • The Mississippi Standards for School Leaders document clearly sets forth the performance expectations for school administrators in the state. Developed and validated by groups of individuals representing a cross section of the education and business communities, the five standards and accompanying indicators shape the preparation, licensure, and continuing professional development of Mississippi’s school administrators.

It is designed to help new principals survive the first years on the job and become strong and effective instructionalleaders.
