  JROTC cadets are eligible to be nominated through their JROTC unit for some of the service academies.  However, chances of selection to attend the academies is greatly improved by also receiving a political nomination.
  
  U.S. Coast Guard Academy applicants do not require a nomination.  The U.S. Coast Guard Academy application is available online September - February, at:

  Juniors who are considering competing for military academy scholarships should apply to attend an academy summer program during the summer between their junior and senior year.  Dates for the academy 2013 summer programs (June and July), and links to further information, are available on the Mississippi JROTC calendar at:  http://www.mde.k12.ms.us/jrotc/jrotc-events . 

  Applications to attend academy summer programs can be submitted beginning 1 Dec (USAF Academy).  The application periods are:

  In addition to attending the service academy summer program, attendance at Boys State or Girls State is also highly recommended during the summer between junior and senior year for academy applicants.

  The U.S. Naval Academy also offers summer STEM programs for rising 8^th thru 11^th grade students.  Information on these programs is also included on the online Mississippi JROTC calendar.  Application period for these programs is 3 Jan – 15 Apr 2013.   http://www.usna.edu/admissions/stem.htm

   

• ROTC Scholarships

  The Army, Air Force, and Navy (includes Marine Corps) offer college ROTC scholarship opportunities.  These scholarships can pay up to full tuition, fees, a book stipend ($900 per year), and a monthly allowance ($300 to $500 per month).   In addition to regular ROTC scholarships, there are special ROTC scholarships offered for Nurses.

  * It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that students submit their ROTC applications WELL BEFORE THE DEADLINE DATES.  Students submitting early have a better chance of selection for the scholarship.  Also, the applications are complex, and if submitted near the deadline date it is too late to submit any missing or incomplete information when the application is processed.  If you want the scholarship, SUBMIT EARLY, do not wait until near the deadline!

• Historically Black Colleges and Universities ROTC Scholarships

  ROTC scholarships are available at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).  HBCU scholarship applications are handled at the unit level, rather than through the national competition.   They can be submitted at any time, and are not bound by the national scholarship deadlines.  HBCU scholarships are not limited to minority applicants.  The requirement is attendance at a HBCU designated college/university, not that the cadet be a minority.  Jackson State University and Alcorn State University are HBCU institutions in Mississippi that have ROTC programs.

• Senior Military Colleges

  Senior Military Colleges offer Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) programs and are places where there are a Corps of Cadets and military type of experience.  Cadets have formation, physical training and wear their uniforms.  The six Senior Military Colleges are:

  North Georgia College and State University; Dahlonega, Georgia

  Norwich University; Northfield, Vermont

  Texas A&M University; College Station, Texas

  Virginia Military Institute; Lexington, Virginia

• Girls/Boys State

  Girls State and Boys State are outstanding opportunities for our cadets who will be completing their junior year this school year. While these programs are not limited to JROTC cadets; they are closely aligned with JROTC fundamentals of patriotism, citizenship, and leadership.  They provide an educational program centered on our democratic system of government, and there are several college scholarship opportunities at the state and national level for participating students. They are also a plus on an applicant's resume when applying for military scholarships.  Additional Information on Girls State and Boys State is available at: http://www.boysandgirlsstate.org/ .

  Students must be sponsored by an American Legion post (Boys State), or an American Legion Auxiliary post (Girls State).  Local posts should be contacted for information about funding Girls State and Boys State attendees.

  Girls State will be held 4-10 Jun 2011, on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi.  Boys State will be held 29 May - 4 Jun 2011, on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi.

  At many schools the counselors are the primary points of contact regarding Girls State and Boys State. Recommend coordinating your efforts regarding Girls State and Boys State with your counselors' office.

• MSU JROTC/ROTC Scholarships

  Mississippi State University offers a $500 scholarship to all JROTC students with a 3.0 GPA.  MSU also offers a $1,000 per year scholarship to students with a 20 or higher ACT score who are enrolled in Air Force or Army ROTC at MSU.  MSU AFROTC can be contacted at 662-325-3810.  MSU Army ROTC can be contacted at 800-811-5013.

• Ole Miss Professor of Aerospace Studies Scholarship

  Ole Miss AFROTC offers a Professor of Aerospace Studies (PAS) scholarship which is available to JROTC graduates.   This is a $5,000 one year scholarship ($2,500 each semester).   The student must enroll in the Ole Miss AFROTC unit.  It is for students who will compete for AFROTC 3.5/3/2.5/2 year scholarships; therefore, selectees should meet the minimum application criteria for the AFROTC scholarship.  Applications must include a recommendation from the senior instructor at the Cadet's JROTC unit.

• CMP JROTC Scholarship Program

  The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) will provide scholarship assistance to encourage and reward outstanding and deserving students in JROTC/ROTC programs who also excel in rifle team programs at their schools.  The CMP seeks applications from high school seniors who will enroll in a four-year college or university or from college students who are already in pursuit of a four-year degree.  The deadline for applications is 5 March 2010.   For more information, visit http://www.odcmp.com/competitions/Scholarships.htm.

• Marion Military Institute

  Marion Military Institute is located in Marion, Alabama, approximately 75 miles east of the Mississippi/Alabama border.  MMI is one of only five Military Junior Colleges in the United States, which offer unique military training programs.  These programs include the Army's two-year Early Commissioning Program (ECP), an Army Reserve Officers Training Corps program through which qualified students can earn a commission as a Second Lieutenant after only two years of college.  The Service Academy Preparation Program (SAP), a freshman year of solid academic and physical preparation for students who wish to attend one of the Service Academies (West Point, Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, or Coast Guard Academy).  The Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP), which allows cadets to be in both Army ROTC and in the National Guard or Army Reserve.  MMI offers the first two years of Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps.  MMI also offers the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Course (PLC) program.  This institution offers a unique opportunity for students who want a military college experience leading to a wide array of commissioning program options.  Students who wish to enroll at MMI without incurring a military service obligation can participate in the Leadership Education Program (LEP) at MMI.

• JPS Military Gala 21 Dec 2012

  Jackson Public Schools held its First Annual JROTC Consolidated Military Gala, on 21 Dec 2012, at the Jackson Convention Complex in downtown Jackson.  This was the first year JPS JROTC leaders put on a single event with all seven high schools.  The featured guest speaker was JPS Superintendent Dr. Cedrick Gray, who is a former JROTC cadet; and there were various military and community leaders in attendance.

• Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement Awards

  The Legion of Valor organization is composed of recipients of the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, and Air Force Cross.  The Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement is awarded to less than 50 JROTC/ROTC Cadets and Midshipmen each year.  This highly selective and prestigious award has been adopted by all of the military service JROTC/ROTC programs.
