What is Healthy Breakfast 4 Kids Grant Program?


The Healthy Breakfast-4-Kids (HB4K) goal is to create and improve access to breakfast in schools nationwide as a means to lessen the huge negative impact of hungry children across our nation. In 2012 Food Family Farming Foundation (F3) and Walmart Foundation are partnering to grant 117 $2500 equipment grants to high needs schools for the purpose of assisting in the successful establishment of universal breakfast in the classroom programs. Grant awardees will be able to order $2500 worth of food service smallwares or equipment to help support implementing breakfast in the classroom via an online order with our partner Tundra Specialties. As part of the grant program, F3 will create universal breakfast implementation resources to be available to all schools via our program, The Lunch Box.

  • Your school must be 40% or higher free/reduced
  • The Food Service Director for the district your school resides in is leading this program implementation.
  • Your principal and school community supports offering universal breakfast in the classroom
  • You must be able to implement your program by January 2013

The grant application period will open February 1, 2012 and run through March 31, 2012.


To submit an application your school will need to sign that certifies your school population is a minimum free/reduced percentage of 60%. The contract will require signatures from the food service director for the district your school resides in and from the school principal. Sample applications will be available soon.

Why Universal Breakfast?


Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and the most underserved from both federal and state standpoints. Despite the fact studies have proven breakfast's importance as a key to overall health and improved academic performance, we do not do enough to ensure our children have access to breakfast every single day.


Of the nearly 20 million children that participate in the National School Lunch Program classified as free and reduced status, only 47.2 percent also participate in breakfast. Though breakfast is served at 87% of the nation's schools, it is a program that suffers primarily because it is not mandated to be scheduled as part of the school day. Breakfast suffers lack of time, lack of marketing, lack of parent knowledge and lack of equipment and space.


With over 17 million households classified as food insecure children's guaranteed access to breakfast at school is the gateway our nation needs to combat hunger and give our most at risk population the chance they deserve to live a healthier life. If we are to overcome these challenges we need to close the nutrition gap and ensure that every child every day eats healthy and delicious food in schools.

The Breakfast Program Feasibility Calculator will assist you in determining the financial implications of providing a breakfast program in your district. The calculator will allow you to do "what if" scenarios to determine needed participation to make the program sustainable. The calculator does not consider start up costs, transportation costs for meals prepared at a central site, or additional custodial costs that might be required for cleaning and trash.

  • Serving Days per Year
  • Enrollment - Enter your enrollment by Free/Reduced/Paid.
  • Anticipated % Participation - Enter the rate of participation that you expect by meal type.
  • Federal Reimbursement Rate - Enter the federal rate expected to be in effect at the time the program begins. The amount by meal type should be entered.
  • State Reimbursement Rate - Enter the state rate in the same manner as the Federal rate if your state provides a reimbursement.
  • Food Costs - Develop your average daily food cost for a breakfast meal. Information from some districts indicates that 80¢ is a good estimate.
  • Labor Hours per Day and Hourly Rate - You will need to consider if you have the capacity in your current program hours to provide the breakfast meals or if you need to add hours. Many districts are able to accomplish most of the production with the addition of a minimal amount of hours.
