Writing Project Collaboration
Focusing on the Common Core State Standards
Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12
The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) is partnering with the seven Mississippi Writing Projects to offer a ten-session professional development program to support teachers as they implement new types of literacy instruction required by the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. Sessions include analysis of student work, instructional strategies, model lessons, class demonstrations, and professional readings that focus on teaching writing effectively.
Training sessions for each of the three separate teacher cohorts will be delivered by grade band K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The training involves two days of regional training during the summer, two days of regional training during the fall, two days of regional training during the spring, and four online training sessions throughout the school year. Additionally, each teacher participating in the Writing Project Collaboration will receive access to Pearson's online formative writing assessment program, Write To Learn www.writetolearn.net/ms, at NO COST for one to three years based upon the teacher's cohort.
Cohort I began in July 2012 and will continue throughout the 2012-2013 school year. Cohort I is limited to those teachers who attended Days 1 and 2 of training in July 2012. Cohort II will begin in June 2013 and continue throughout the 2013-2014 school year, and Cohort III will follow for the 2014-2015 school year. Teachers must attend training for Days 1 and 2 in order to be eligible for follow-up days with a given cohort.
The MDE will offset the development and delivery cost so that school districts will be responsible for a nominal fee of $250 per teacher. There are no limitations on the number of participants per district, and districts are not assigned to a Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA). Registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis each spring through North Mississippi Education Consortium (NMEC) at www.nmec.net. The registration fee will be paid to the NMEC.
