MEDIA ADVISORY

REVISED: Please note new start time

For Immediate Release: November 28, 2016

Statewide Reading Initiative Announcement Set for Nov. 29

WHO: The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, Mississippi Department of Education, University of Mississippi Center for Excellence in Literacy Instruction, Senate Education Chairman Gray Tollison

WHAT: A state alliance will announce the expansion of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading across Mississippi

WHEN: 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 29 (new start time)

WHERE: 2nd floor, Mississippi State Capitol Rotunda, 400 High St., Jackson

WHY: The statewide initiative adds greater emphasis to grade-level reading in light of Mississippi’s Literacy-Based Promotion Act. The state law requires that a student scoring at the lowest achievement level on the 3rd Grade Reading Summative Assessment be retained in 3rd grade, unless the student meets the good cause exemptions specified in the law. The law was amended in 2016 and will require students starting in the 2018-2019 school year to score above the lowest two achievement levels in order to be promoted to the 4th grade.

The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading helps communities and schools collaborate to promote opportunities for students to improve their reading skills.
