Mississippi Board of Education
The Mississippi Board of Education is comprised of nine members who are appointed as prescribed by the Constitution of the State of Mississippi. The Board appoints the State Superintendent of Education, sets public education policy and oversees the Mississippi Department of Education.
Membership
Section 203 of the Mississippi Constitution was amended to reflect as of July 1, 1984 the Mississippi Governor shall appoint one (1) member from Mississippi's Northern Supreme Court District, one (1) member from Mississippi's Central Supreme Court District, one (1) member from Mississippi's Southern Supreme Court District, one (1) member who is employed as a school administrator, and one (1) member who is employed as a public school teacher. Additionally, the Lieutenant Governor shall appoint two (2) members at-large, and the Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives shall appoint two (2) members at-large.
