Comprehensive Health Revision Committee:

INTRODUCTION TO COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH

The Comprehensive Health Study ensures that all students will gain information and skills about issues important to their age level and apply these skills to every day health-related behaviors.

There are nine strands that focus on the healthful living behavior of students in grades K-12. This guide addresses health competencies, sample objectives, and suggested strategies and assessments. These competencies were influenced by the National Standards Movement in Education Reform, and a newer vision of the role of assessment in the teaching/learning process. The health curriculum can be taught as a one year or one semester course at the secondary level. Teachers of semester courses must select the competencies most suitable for their students.

Like most subjects taught at the secondary level, many of the health competencies are an integral part of other subjects. Therefore, the health instructor should consult with other teachers to determine the students’ need for studying specific competencies.

The general description of each competency’s content is first presented, followed by the possible objectives to consider for each grade. Within each grade level, the objective emphasizes key points. The sample objectives will serve as benchmarks, and will not limit the teacher’s usage to this document only. Additional objectives may be covered by the instructor.

Lastly, a variety of assessment techniques appropriate for assessing student achievement of the specified competencies are suggested. The assessment examples provided herein are just that, examples; they are not meant to be a comprehensive listing of available assessment techniques, nor are they meant to be the "best" assessment techniques to be used in all situations.
