English-Speaking Union's (ESU) National Shakespeare Competition
The Jackson Branch Finals of the English-Speaking Union's (ESU) National Shakespeare Competition is scheduled for Saturday, January 20, at Mississippi School of the Arts in Brookhaven.. The ESU's website www.esuus.org has detailed information on competition procedures and forms, suggested monologues, and student guidelines. To highlight a few main points about the school competition:- Students in grades 10-12 are eligible. -Students who have acted for pay in the 2006-07 school year are ineligible.- Students must perform a Shakespearean monologue of no more than 20 lines of verse/prose. - At least three students should compete in the school competition. -Deadline for School Entry Competition Form is December 21. Playwright Discovery Award for Students
The VSA arts Playwright Discovery Award program challenges middle and high school students of all abilities to take a closer look at the world around them, examine how disability affects their lives and the lives of others, and express their views throughthe art of writing a one-act play. The award recipients receive monetary awards and a trip to Washington, D.C. to view the production at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. 2007 Call for Entries
VSA arts is pleased to launch a call for entries to identify talented young musicians with disabilities. Four finalists (two from the United States and two from countries outside the U.S.) will each be awarded $5,000 and will perform in concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. in spring 2007. "U.S. Dept. of Education Talent Search Program"
This program helps to identify qualified youths with potential for education at the postsecondary level and encourage them to compete secondary school and undertake a program of postsecondary education. Maximum Award: $220,000-$3,6000,000. Eligibility: Institutions of higher education: public or private agencies or organizations; combinations of institutions, agencies, and organizations; and secondary schools under exceptional circumstances, such as if there is no institutions, agencies and organization capable of carrying out a Talent Search (TS) project in the proposed target area. The National School and Business Partnerships Award supports and recognizes the efforts of schools and businesses that partner to improve the academic, social or physical well-being of students. "National Association for Gifted Children"
The National Association for Gifted Children has announced the NAGC-Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award Program for students, grades 3 through 6, who have distinguished themselves in academic achievement, leadership, or the visual or performing arts. Nominate a Teacher to be an 'American Star in Teaching'
The U.S. Department of Education again plans to honor classroom teachers by recognizing the American Stars of Teaching. The Department's Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative is seeking nominations and information about teachers who are improving student achievement, using innovative strategies, and making a difference in the lives of their students. Teachers across all grade levels and disciplines will be honored this fall. One teacher or team of teachers from each state will be recognized. C-SPAN Archives Grants
The C-SPAN Archives Grants awardees are granted the videotapes of their choice from the extensive collection in the C-SPAN Archives for creative proposals for using the network's programming in the classroom or in research projects. Kids In Need Foundation Teacher Grants
The 2005-06 Kids In Need Teacher Grant applications will become available July 15. This year more than $105,000 is being offered in grants to certified K-12 teachers at any public, private, or parochial school in the U.S. The grants are from $100 to $500 for innovative classroom projects. National sponsors of the program are Jo-Ann Stores, Inc. and Office Depot. Regional sponsors include Fred Meyer, Publix, and Price Less Drug Stores. The website currently has the guidelines posted, which teachers can use to prepare to apply. The deadline to submit applications, which can be completed and submitted online, is September 30, 2005. Hasbro Programs for Children Grants
Hasbro Children Foundation grants to support the development and/or expansion of programs for children. Maximum Award: $500-$35,000. Eligibility: Programs must provide direct services to children under age 13. They must serve children and families who are economically disadvantaged. Allen Foundation
The Allen Foundation supports educational nutrition programs, with priority given to training programs for children and young adults to improve their health and development.
