Very few Mississippi school districts have not been impacted by Hurricane Katrina in some way, either directly or indirectly. The MDE is committed to helping districts meet their educational responsibilities as quickly as possible, which in many cases involves significant challenges related to property damage, displaced personnel and students, and a long list of losses that will have to be replaced, including textbooks, computers, libraries, cafeteria equipment and classroom furnishings. The links provided here are designed to keep school district leaders abreast of the latest news regarding resources, assistance, regulations and other critical information.
This legislation authorized three new grant programs to assist school districts and schools in meeting the educational needs of students displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and in helping schools that were closed as a result of the hurricanes to reopen as quickly and effectively as possible. The grants are Immediate Aid to Restart School Operations, Emergency Impact Aid for Displaced Students, and Assistance for Homeless Youth.
