Mississippi Board of Education meets in Jackson
The Mississippi Board of Education met recently in Jackson and approved the following:
Approved:
•Endorsed the recommendations and initiatives presented in a report on African American Males in College. Dr. Larry Day of the Mississippi State Board for Community and Junior Colleges and Dr. Reginald Sykes of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning presented the report to the Mississippi Board of Education.
Recommendations are as follows:
-To craft a model for data collection, database development and analysis that will form the content of recommendations on policies and programs directed for the African American Males in College Initiative
-To use data and analysis to determine what programs work (i.e. best practices) and those that do not work
-To review steps, programs and procedures that lead to successful college-level matriculation of African American males
-To identify essential social resources that measure success (i.e. financial and human) and to identify social determinations that impede successful collegiate-level matriculation
•To begin the Administrative Procedures Act Process: To approve a
policy to prescribe the information and format required to be included
in the development and publication of an annual report as required by
Senate Bill 2628, the Children First Act of 2009. There are three categories of information which shall be included in the Annual Reports: General Information, Testing /Achievement Information and Budget Information.
•The revision to the Licensure Guidelines for American Board Certification (ABCTE) Alternate Route to amend the mentoring requirements as recommended by the Commission on Teacher and Administrator Education, Certification and Licensure Development.
•A proposal from Vocational Education for New Occupational and Technical Competencies for Vocational Licensure as recommended by the Commission on Teacher and Administrator Education, Certification and Licensure Development.
•The four new Praxis II Subject Area Exams and Cut Scores as recommended by the Commission on Teacher and Administrator Education, Certification and Licensure Development. The recommendations from the subcommittee for passing scores on the new test are:
Economics (test 0910) - 490
Health Education (test 0550) - 600
Latin (test 0600) - 610
Physical Science (test 0481) - 147
•To allocate funds to school sites under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. These funds are used to promote the consumption fresh fruits and vegetables in schools. Grants will be awarded to schools that have the greatest percentage of free and reduced eligible students.
