Mississippi Board of Education meets in Jackson

The Mississippi Board of Education met recently in Jackson and approved the following:

Approved:

•The Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) results under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001. On August 31, 2009 final AYP results were calculated after districts were given a window to appeal preliminary AYP results in accordance with NCLB.

•A policy to prescribe the information and format required to be included in the development and publication of an annual report as required by Senate Bill 2628, the Children First Act of 2009. The report has received public comments during the Administrative Procedures Act process.

•A new school site for the Ocean Springs School District. Pursuant to Section 37-7-315, Mississippi Code of 1972, Annotated, Ocean Springs School District requested approval of a site for the construction of new Ocean Springs High School (9th through 12th grade with an enrollment of approximately 2,200 students) located on approximately 40 acres at the intersection of highway 57 and Old Spanish Trail.

•A new school site for the Ocean Springs School District. Pursuant to Section 37-7-315, Mississippi Code of 1972, Annotated, Holmes County School District requested approval of a site for the construction of a new William Dean Elementary School (kindergarten through 5th grade with an enrollment of approximately 700 students) located on approximately 20 acres on Bowling Green Road.

Special Called Meeting:

The Mississippi Board of Education will meet Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. for a special interim called meeting to discuss recommendations regarding the growth model for the 2009 Statewide Accountability System and approval of the Mississippi Public School Accountability Standards, 2009 edition . The meeting will be held in the fourth floor board room at the Central High School Building in Jackson . The Central High School Building is located at 359 North West Street , Jackson , MS . The public is invited to attend.

Next Meeting:

The next regular scheduled meeting of the Mississippi Board of Education (MBE) will be October 23, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in the Board Room on the 4 th Floor of the Central High School Building, 359 North West Street , Jackson , MS . The MBE will also meet on Friday, October 24, 2009 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Board Room.
